Contemporary American History 18771913 Beard Charles A Charles Austin 9781318986897 Books

Charles Beard presents a very balanced review of the history of America from Hayes to Taft, and the predictions he completes this book with of the incoming Wilson administration is quite accurate. Dr. Beard had an incredible desire to tell the truth, with no intent to cover or color it through political slant.
A very good insight to our history.

Contemporary American History 18771913 Beard Charles A Charles Austin 9781318986897 Books Reviews

‘Contemporary American History 1877-1913’ is an issue-based history of the Second Industrial Revolution and the Progressive Era. The issues are primarily political and economic. While politics and economics are often intertwined, they were no more so than in the era of Capitalism – the time period after Reconstruction, but before the Great War.

While this book is nearly one hundred years old, it offers good help for readers interested in better understanding the age of capitalism and the progressive era. Many of Beard’s assumptions are still valid today. The difficult issues of the era are fleshed out, giving the reader who may have trouble understanding them an additional explanation that could help. In particular, there were discussions of two issues that I found helpful the tariff and the gold versus silver debate. One disappointment was that a third concept that I had hoped to read about, civil service, was not given the extensive coverage of the other two issues.

If you are looking for a book to remember names, dates, and events – this book is not for you. Charles Beard explains his philosophy of a history book in the ‘Preface,’ and indicates that some of the staples of history are omitted, as well as the black type and ‘apparatus’ prescribed for manuals. Beard focuses on understanding the main issues of the era of capitalism. In that respect, he delivers. For remembering names, dates, and events – the apparatus is useful.

Two other topics of the era, The West and Reconstruction, are addressed but not a focus of this book. You won’t find the subjugation of the Indian a part of this book, nor will you find the range wars a topic of discussion. Readers of the first chapter, on White Dominion, might have an issue with political correctness. For instance, the conclusion of the chapter asks if the Negro has the capacity for sustained economic activity to lift the race from serfdom. Can they throw off the shiftlessness and indifference to higher standards that obstruct their chances of gaining a substantial economic basis? If you cannot accept the book as a product of its times, then find another book to clarify your understanding of the era.

I found the book a welcome companion for discussion of the issues of the era. This should not be the first book that you would read on the era, but reading this book might be more instructive than re-reading another book for the umpteenth time.

One annoying feature of e-books is that tables are formatted incorrectly. Chapter two has a table of wage earners in manufacturing, and the appendix contains a table of presidential elections that are difficult to read in the format of an e-book. I have noticed this kind of bug for every history book that I have downloaded from Project Gutenberg. If you want to see the table in a readable format, you have to go online for the HTML version of the book. This is not a great solution for those who prefer to download books and read them offline. I don’t have a kindle reader, so I cannot tell you if the tables are formatted improperly in this medium.

What do you expect for free? ‘Contemporary American History’ is still educational, even with its imperfections, and Project Gutenberg provides a great service for students and buffs of American History.
The print is so very tiny that it is impossible to read.
